BAS celebrate World Bird Month with Bird Festival Belize City, Belize, October 6, 2009 - -The Belize Audubon Society invites all bird lovers to join in celebrating October as World Bird Month with the World Bird Festival. As avid birders will note the month of October is an exciting one as many birds begin their winter migration. So…if you are an avid birder or a novice interested in birding BAS invites you to join us at one of our Bird Festival Events listed below.

BAS is bringing birding to a town near you! Participation in the events is FREE of cost. All those interested are asked to provide their own snacks and transportation to and from the event. Martin Migration

Gray-breasted Martin

While enjoying the summer breeze and relaxing by the sea at BTL Park on Wednesday evening (July 23), I observed a great cloud of Gray-breasted Martins overhead. According to Birds of Belize, in July and August, large flocks of migrating martins of both species (Purple and Gray-breasted) gather in certain areas along the coast. The Purple Martin, appearing in late June, is Belize’s earliest autumn migrant and is seen most frequently on the cayes.

Great Tinamou Chick from Bladen Nature Reserve

The Great Tinamou is often detected by its haunting whistle but rarely seen in the forest. Mark McReynolds, who is studying Scarlet Macaws in Belize, came across this Great Tinamou chick in Bladen Nature Reserve. Its cryptic coloration matches well with the leaf litter.

An interesting note on the breeding biology of tinamous - did you know that males incubate eggs and care for the chicks once they’ve hatched?

Have you seen any noteworthy bird activity in Belize lately? The Belize Audubon Society hopes to deliver up-to-date information on sightings throughout the country via the Bird Watch section of our web-site. Our goal is to provide easy access to bird activity to all interested bird watchers and to document rare and unusual bird sightings in Belize.

With the new WordPress powered section of belizeaudubon.org, which you are now viewing, anyone can contribute their bird sightings to the Bird Watch. Interested persons can register on-line (the registration link is located in the right side-bar under the Meta heading). After entering a user name and e-mail address a password will be e-mailed to you. Once a personal user account has been approved you can begin sharing your observations from the field.
